Windows 7 Starter Edition

Ok, it is official, Microsoft has finally gone nuts.
There are rumors that the Starter Edition of the upcoming Microsoft 7 will only support THREE applications at once.
That’s right, once you try opening a fourth application the following popup will appear:

Now, how wonderful is this? To make things even better, I have some hints for uncle Ballmer to make this release even more successful:
- Limit the number of simultaneous colors on screen to 4096 (Ahhh, the good old Amiga 500 times)
- No more than 10 mouse clicks per minute
- Maximum 2 hours of continuous usage, then the computer switches itself off for 30 minutes (without warning of course)
- No more than 1 USB device connected at any given time
- Only mono audio output trough speakers
- All files saved from installed programs self-destruct after 24 hours
And the list could go on…
Photoshop … in your browser!

It is not an easy task to impress me with web-related stuff, after being involved with the internet on a daily basis for more than 10 years, I have really seen it all. But not THIS. The guys at Pixlr.com have really outdone themselves by recreating a nearly perfect Photoshop clone … inside your browser.
It doesn’t obviously have all the features you might find in Photoshop, but you can access it everywhere there is a computer with an internet connection, it’s totally free, and it has all the functionality you might require for most of your “quick ‘n dirty” photo fixing needs.
Really, it is so perfect that it is hard to believe it’s “just” a flash application.

Give your CPU cycles to a good cause

Most of us have in their home computers processors with loads of power, dual and sometimes quad-core monsters that most of the times are only used to render web pages, check email addresses or play the occasional videogame.
If you feel like giving your unused CPU time to a good cause, there is a nice piece of open-source software, called Boinc, that makes use of grid computing to solve complex scientific computational problems.
There are many sub-projects you can join after installing it, and you can pick the ones you want to donate your idle CPU cycles to. I have personally chosen “Help Conquer Cancer” and “FightAIDS@Home”, and I have set the Boinc program to run everyday between 2am and 7pm, when I am usually speeping or at work (and so my computer would not be used anyway).
Maybe it is useless, but I like to believe that sometimes, even something so little can make a difference.

CSI New York and Visual Basic GUI Interfaces
Posted by Fulvio | Filed under Blog
If you are not into computer / programming, this is not going to make much sense for you. For all the others … enjoy this masterpiece of technical dialogue straight from the CSI New York TV series:
“I’ll create a GUI interface using VISUAL BASIC, I’ll see if I can track an IP address.”
12 hours later …
“Sorry sir, I could not track the IP address but I managed to drag two checkboxes, five labels and three buttons over this frame window, and one of them even creates a “hello world” popup when you click on it!”
